Immy Owusu
‘Afrodelik’ music that fuses Psychedlia, Zamrock and Highlife.
Immy grew up playing in the Geelong/Surf Coast Rock scene alongside the West African music of his Ghanaian roots. Wishing to explore the trans-Atlantic connections of Pan-African Rhythm, Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll, in 2016 he traveled to Ghana to study with his grandfather, legendary ‘Palm Wine Highlife’ musician Koo Nimo, added a fuzz pedal and began to experiment.
Described as “The Very Definition Of Culture Clash” by Don Letts (BBC Radio), Owusu’s music has received high praise and substantial airplay around the world including on KEXP, Worldwide FM, NPR and Bandcamp Weekly and was even playlisted by Dangermouse.
Immy’s debut album LO-LIFE! draws on the work of West African giants such as Ebo Taylor and William Onyeabor. Created with members of Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo, and The Senegambian Jazz band, LO-LIFE! was album of the week on PBS, SYN and French Independent Radio.
Recently voted Music Victoria’s 2023 Best Musician and Nominated for Best Regional Act, Owusu is an upcoming force to keep an eye on.
